These days, Bluetooth is almost everywhere.

Most of us use it every single day without giving it a second thought.

So what exactly is Bluetooth?

And why does it sometimes seem to work perfectly...

First... Why Is It Called Bluetooth?

Believe it or not...

Bluetooth wasn't named after technology at all.

It was named after Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, a Viking king who ruled Denmark and Norway more than 1,000 years ago.

His claim to fame was helping unite different regions under one kingdom.

The engineers behind Bluetooth thought it was a fitting metaphor.

Their technology was designed to unite different devices that normally couldn't communicate with one another.

Even the Bluetooth logo reflects this history.

It's a combination of two Viking runes representing Harald's initials.

Sometimes technology has a much more interesting history than you'd expect.


Bluetooth Is Just Radio

At its core, Bluetooth is a radio.

Not the kind that plays music.

The kind that sends information through the air.

Instead of using wires, Bluetooth devices communicate using radio waves over short distances.

Your headphones aren't connected by magic.

They're simply having a very fast radio conversation with your phone.


Pairing Is Like An Introduction
