Why Isn't My 1 Gig Internet Downloading at 1 Gigabyte Per Second?

Or: the tiny lowercase "b" that makes a very big difference. Your gigabit internet isn't lying — bits and bytes just aren't the same thing.

You pay for gigabit internet. You run a speed test and it says 950 Mbps — excellent. Then you download a game and your computer says 110 MB/s. Wait a minute. Where did the other 840 go? Are you only getting a fraction of the speed you're paying for? Probably not. The confusion comes down to two units that look almost identical: Mbps and MB/s. That tiny difference between a lowercase b and an uppercase B changes the number dramatically.


Bits and Bytes Are Not the Same Thing

Computers ultimately represent information using bits. A bit is a single binary value — 0 or 1. A byte is a group of eight bits. So: 8 bits = 1 byte. That's the key to this entire article.


Internet Speeds Are Usually Measured in Bits

Internet providers typically advertise connection speeds in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). So when your provider advertises "1 Gig Internet," they're generally talking about 1 gigabit per second — not 1 gigabyte per second. Those are very different numbers.


Downloads Are Often Measured in Bytes

Your internet provider measures your connection in megabits per second, but your browser, game launcher, or download application may display megabytes per second. Same connection, different units. To roughly convert megabits into megabytes, divide by eight.


Let's Do the Math

Suppose you have a 1 Gbps internet connection — that's 1,000 megabits per second. Divide by eight: 1,000 ÷ 8 = 125. So the theoretical maximum is roughly 125 megabytes per second. Suddenly that game downloading at 110 MB/s doesn't look so bad. You're not getting 110 out of 1,000. You're getting 110 out of a theoretical maximum of roughly 125.


The Capitalization Actually Matters

This is one of those rare cases where capitalization is genuinely important. Mb = megabit, MB = megabyte. So Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. A lowercase b means bits, an uppercase B means bytes — an incredibly small typographical difference representing an eightfold difference in the amount of data.


Why Do Internet Providers Use Bits?

This sometimes gets presented as though providers invented the measurement just to make their numbers look bigger. They didn't. Data transmission has traditionally been measured in bits per second throughout networking, while file sizes and storage are commonly discussed in bytes. Both measurements are legitimate — they just describe data in different units. The problem is that consumers encounter both, often without anyone explaining the difference.


So Should 1 Gbps Always Give Me 125 MB/s?

No — that figure is a useful theoretical conversion, but the real world is messier. Your actual download speed can be affected by network overhead, your router, Wi-Fi conditions, your computer, the download server, other devices using the connection, internet congestion, and storage performance. Having a gigabit connection means the connection is capable of moving data very quickly. It doesn't mean every server on Earth will send data to you at that speed.


Think of Your Internet Connection Like a Highway

Imagine your internet connection is an eight-lane highway — a lot of traffic can travel through it. But suppose the road leading from the place you're downloading from only has two lanes. Your eight-lane highway can't make that road wider. Downloads work similarly. Your connection may support 1 Gbps, but the server sending the file may only send data at a fraction of that speed. Your connection determines how much traffic you can handle. It doesn't determine how quickly everyone else sends traffic to you.


That's Why Speed Tests Can Be Misleading

A speed test is specifically designed to test your connection. Speed-test services typically use powerful servers and open multiple simultaneous connections to push your internet service as hard as possible — the goal is essentially "how fast can this connection go under favorable conditions?" That's useful information, but it doesn't mean every website, game server, or cloud service will operate at that speed. A speed test measures the highway. A download also depends on where the traffic is coming from.


Wi-Fi Adds Another Bottleneck

Suppose you're paying for gigabit internet and your router is receiving close to 1 Gbps — but your laptop is connected over Wi-Fi. Your download can only be as fast as the slowest part of the chain: Internet → Router → Wi-Fi → Laptop. If the Wi-Fi connection between your laptop and router can only deliver 500 Mbps under current conditions, you're not going to download at 1 Gbps. Your internet service isn't necessarily the problem. The bottleneck is inside your house.


Other Bottlenecks Worth Knowing

Wired connections aren't automatically unlimited either. Older equipment may only support 100 Mbps Ethernet — connect your gigabit internet through a 100 Mbps port and you've just created a very effective bottleneck. Storage can become a factor too. With very fast connections you're not simply receiving data, you're writing it somewhere. Modern SSDs handle ordinary gigabit downloads without much trouble, but as internet speeds climb into multi-gigabit territory, every link in the chain has to keep up.


How Long Should a 100 GB Game Take?

With a true 1 Gbps connection at its theoretical maximum, you're moving roughly 125 MB every second. In ideal mathematical conditions that puts a 100 GB download somewhere around 13 to 14 minutes. Real-world conditions will usually stretch it somewhat longer, but that's still remarkably fast — the numbers just look smaller because your download software measures bytes while your ISP measures bits.

Technology loves abbreviations. And occasionally two abbreviations look so similar that they create decades of confusion. Mbps and MB/s — one tiny letter changes everything. So if you're paying for 1 Gig internet and your game is downloading at 110 MB/s, don't call your internet provider demanding the other 890. You're probably getting very close to what you paid for. Your connection was advertised in bits, your download is displayed in bytes, and there are eight bits in every byte. Sometimes understanding technology doesn't require knowing complicated networking protocols or electrical engineering. Sometimes you just need to know whether the B is uppercase.
