On July 25, 1984, Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to perform a spacewalk, spending 3 hours and 35 minutes outside the Salyut 7 space station cutting, welding, and soldering metal in the vacuum of space.

On this day in 1984, Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya made history as the first woman to perform an extravehicular activity, stepping outside the Salyut 7 space station alongside commander Vladimir Dzhanibekov during the Soyuz T-12 mission. The crew — Dzhanibekov, Savitskaya, and research cosmonaut Igor Volk — had launched on July 17 and docked with Salyut 7 the following day.

Savitskaya had already broken barriers two years earlier as the second woman in space, following Valentina Tereshkova in 1963. By 1984 she was a flight engineer and veteran test pilot with a resume that included multiple world aviation records. She had been selected for the Soyuz T-12 mission in December 1983 — three weeks after NASA publicly announced that astronaut Kathryn Sullivan had been assigned to perform the first American female spacewalk aboard Space Shuttle Challenger that October. Soviet mission planners made no secret of wanting to reach the milestone first.

What Savitskaya did with that milestone, however, was anything but ceremonial:

The URI Tool: The primary objective of the EVA was to test the Universal Hand Tool — Universalny Rabochy Instrument, or URI — developed at the Paton Institute in Kiev. The device was an electron-beam generator capable of cutting, welding, soldering, and brazing metal in the vacuum and extreme temperature swings of low Earth orbit.

The Work: Standing on foot restraints outside the station, Savitskaya performed six cuts of titanium and stainless steel plates, two coatings of anodized aluminum samples, six tests of tin and lead solder, and precision cuts of a 0.5mm titanium sample. Three hours and 35 minutes of technical, methodical industrial labor — conducted in a spacesuit, in silence, 200 miles above the Earth.

The Significance: The URI tests proved that orbital crews could perform structural repairs on damaged hull plating and critical components — techniques that would later prove essential in saving the Mir space station and making the construction of the International Space Station possible.

Kathryn Sullivan completed her own historic EVA on October 11, 1984, becoming the first American woman to walk in space. Both women had accomplished something the previous two decades of spaceflight had left undone — not because the capability wasn't there, but because no one had sent them out to do it.

Savitskaya never flew again. She had been assigned to command an all-female crew to Salyut 7 in 1985, but the mission was canceled after the station lost contact with ground control. She retired from active cosmonaut duty in 1993 and went on to serve in the Russian State Duma for more than two decades, chairing its Defense Committee.

History reminds us: space exploration isn't just about making footprints on distant shores — it's about learning to handle the tools needed to build a future once we arrive. On July 25, 1984, a woman demonstrated that in the most literal way possible, six cuts of titanium at a time.
