Pull out your phone.

Open your favorite maps app.

Within seconds, a little blue dot appears.

It knows what street you're on.

It knows which direction you're facing.

Sometimes it even knows which side of the road you're standing on.

It's so common today that we barely think about it.

But if you stop for a moment...

It's astonishing.

How does a phone, sitting in your pocket, know where it is on a planet that's nearly 25,000 miles around?

The answer isn't magic.

It's mathematics.

And a constellation of satellites flying thousands of miles above your head.


First... GPS Doesn't Use Cell Towers

This surprises a lot of people.

Your phone can absolutely use cell towers to help estimate your location.

But that's not GPS.

GPS works even when you're nowhere near a cell tower.

In fact, dedicated GPS receivers have been guiding hikers, sailors, pilots, and surveyors long before smartphones existed.

The satellites are doing the heavy lifting.


Meet the GPS Constellation

The United States' Global Positioning System (GPS) is made up of dozens of satellites orbiting Earth.

They're constantly moving.

They're constantly transmitting.

And they're constantly broadcasting two important pieces of information:

  • Who they are
  • Exactly what time it is

That's all.

They aren't tracking your phone.

They're simply announcing:

"I'm Satellite #12, and it's exactly 2:15:03.421..."

Over and over.

Every second of every day.


Your Phone Is Listening

Your phone isn't shouting into space.

It's listening.

As signals arrive from multiple satellites, your phone measures how long each signal took to arrive.

Remember...

Radio waves travel at the speed of light.

If a signal took a tiny fraction longer to arrive...

That satellite must be farther away.

Now your phone knows something important.

Not exactly where it is...

But how far away it is from each satellite.


One Satellite Isn't Enough

Imagine someone tells you:

"You're exactly 10 miles from Columbia."

Could you point to your exact location?

No.

You could be anywhere on a giant circle around the city.

Now imagine another clue:

"You're also exactly 15 miles from Lexington."

Now the possibilities shrink dramatically.

Add a third measurement...

And suddenly only one location fits all three distances.

That's essentially how GPS works.

It's called trilateration.

Why Four Satellites?

You may hear people say GPS needs three satellites.

That's close.

But most receivers actually use at least four.

Why?

Because your phone's clock isn't nearly as accurate as the atomic clocks onboard the satellites.

That fourth satellite helps correct tiny timing errors.

Your location could be miles off.

Yes.

GPS satellites carry incredibly accurate atomic clocks.

And they have to.

Light travels about 186,000 miles every second.

An error of just one millionth of a second could shift your calculated position by hundreds of feet.

Why Does GPS Sometimes Struggle?

GPS signals are surprisingly weak by the time they reach Earth.

They can be affected by:

  • Tall buildings
  • Dense forests
  • Mountains
  • Underground parking garages
  • Heavy storms (to a much smaller extent)

This is why navigation sometimes becomes less accurate in downtown city centers.

Your phone isn't broken.

It's simply having trouble hearing the satellites clearly.


Why Does It Find Me Faster Sometimes?

Your phone remembers.

If you've recently used GPS, it often already knows:

  • Roughly where it is
  • Which satellites should be overhead

That makes acquiring a position much faster.

Starting completely from scratch takes longer.


Does GPS Cost Money?

Receiving GPS signals?

No.

The satellites continuously broadcast their signals.

Your phone simply listens.

Using a maps app may require internet access to download maps or traffic information.

But the actual GPS positioning itself is free.

The satellites aren't sending you a bill.
