On August 16, 1960, Kittinger stepped from 102,800 feet with a failing pressure glove he hid from ground control — and fell for 4 minutes and 36 seconds.

On this day in 1960, U.S. Air Force Captain Joseph Kittinger climbed into the open gondola of the Excelsior III balloon at Tularosa, New Mexico, with two placards attached to the equipment around him. One was a cereal-box license plate his son had cut out for good luck. The other read: "This is the highest step in the world."

One hour and 31 minutes later, he was 102,800 feet above New Mexico — nearly 20 miles up, above 99 percent of Earth's atmosphere — and he knew something ground control didn't. The pressure seal in his right glove had failed at 43,000 feet during the ascent. His hand had swollen to nearly twice its normal size and lost most of its function. He had said nothing, fearing the mission would be scrubbed. He had continued climbing another 60,000 feet in silence.

Project Excelsior was not a stunt. It was a serious Air Force research program with a practical, urgent question: if a pilot or astronaut had to bail out from extreme altitude — from an X-15, from a spacecraft, from the edge of the atmosphere — would the equipment work? Would they survive? The Beaupre multi-stage parachute system being tested had never been proven at this altitude.

The question had already nearly cost Kittinger his life once.

Excelsior I — The Flat Spin: On the program's first jump in November 1959, the small stabilization drogue chute deployed too early and wrapped around Kittinger's neck, sending him into an uncontrolled flat spin at roughly 120 revolutions per minute. The centrifugal forces rendered him unconscious. He survived only because a reserve parachute deployed automatically before he reached a fatal altitude. The program was redesigned to prevent it happening again.

The Redesigned Drogue: For Excelsior III, the stabilization chute was redesigned to deploy at a specific altitude rather than on a timer, giving the jumper time to clear the gondola before it activated. That six-foot drogue was the critical fix — the difference between a controlled fall and a fatal spin.

The Fall

At 7:12 a.m., with his right hand useless and the sky above him shading from blue to black, Kittinger stepped off the gondola step into nothing.

Falling through air so thin it provided almost no aerodynamic resistance, he accelerated to an estimated 614 miles per hour — faster than most propeller-driven aircraft had ever flown. Because there was no dense air rushing past him to give a sensation of speed, Kittinger later described the fall as feeling eerily peaceful. The drogue chute stabilized him against any spin. He free-fell for 4 minutes and 36 seconds before his main 28-foot parachute opened automatically at 17,500 feet. He touched down 13 minutes and 45 seconds after stepping off the gondola, alive, his data recorders intact.

The Excelsior III jump held the record for highest parachute jump for 52 years — until October 14, 2012, when Felix Baumgartner jumped from 128,100 feet as part of the Red Bull Stratos project. Kittinger served as Capsule Communicator for Baumgartner's jump, talking him through the ascent and the step off the capsule from the same ground control role he had experienced from the other side half a century before. When Baumgartner landed safely, Kittinger was among the first to embrace him.

Kittinger died on December 9, 2022, at the age of 94.

The data collected from Project Excelsior directly influenced the design of pressure suits, ejection systems, and life-support equipment used throughout the early NASA space program. Every astronaut who has ever had to trust a pressure suit owes something to a man who climbed 102,800 feet with a broken glove and didn't tell anyone.

History reminds us: the path into the cosmos wasn't just built with heavy rockets. It was forged by individuals willing to climb past the point of no return, keep their own counsel about what was failing, and step anyway — so that the people who came after them would have one less reason to die.
