On this day in 1839

On August 19, 1839, France gave the daguerreotype to the world — free to every nation except Britain, where Daguerre had filed a patent one week earlier.

On this day in 1839, at a packed joint session of the French Academy of Sciences and the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, physicist and politician François Arago rose to publicly reveal the complete technical details of the daguerreotype process — the first practical method of photography ever given to the world. The man who had invented it, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre, was in the audience. The French government had purchased his rights in exchange for a pension of 6,000 francs per year, and 4,000 francs per year for Isidore Niépce, son of Daguerre's late collaborator. The invention was declared a gift from France — free to all nations.

Except Britain. Daguerre had quietly filed a British patent one week earlier, on August 12, 1839 — seven days before the public announcement — protecting his commercial rights in the one market where the gift would not apply. Britain would remain the only nation in the world where the daguerreotype was a proprietary process rather than a public one, a fact that meaningfully slowed its adoption there.

The Man Behind the Process

Daguerre was not a scientist. He was a theater set designer, celebrated across Paris for his Diorama — a theatrical experience using enormous, carefully lit, translucent painted screens to create the illusion of distant landscapes for paying audiences. His extraordinary eye for light and visual effect was what had drawn him into the quest for a way to make light record itself.

In 1829 he had partnered with Nicéphore Niépce, a fellow Frenchman who had already produced the world's first permanent photograph in 1826 using bitumen-coated pewter and many hours of exposure. When Niépce died in 1833, Daguerre pressed on alone, eventually discovering that silver iodide was far more light-sensitive than bitumen, and then — by accident, according to legend — that mercury vapor could develop the faint latent image left on a silver plate into a visible, detailed photograph. A sodium thiosulfate rinse stopped the chemical process and fixed the image permanently.

The complete process, as Arago described it that August morning:

Plate preparation: A sheet of silver-plated copper, polished to a mirror finish, was sensitized by exposure to iodine and bromine vapors, forming a thin layer of light-sensitive silver halides on the surface.

Exposure: The prepared plate was placed inside a camera obscura and exposed to the subject for several minutes — early daguerreotypes required long sittings in direct sunlight, which explains the rigid, unsmiling expressions in so many early portraits.

Development: The exposed plate was placed over heated mercury, whose vapors bonded selectively to the light-struck silver, bringing out the latent image with extraordinary resolution.

Fixing: A rinse in sodium thiosulfate stopped the reaction and made the image permanent — producing a mirror-like, one-of-a-kind photograph with no negative and no possibility of making copies.

What Had Already Been Lost

There is a shadow across the story. On the night of March 8, 1839 — five months before the public announcement — Daguerre's Paris Diorama building caught fire and burned to the ground. The blaze destroyed his studio, most of his surviving early daguerreotypes, and a significant portion of his research notes. He had already signed his pension agreement with the French government by that point, but the scale of what was lost in that fire — images that would have been the oldest photographs in existence — remains one of the quiet tragedies of the history of science.

The World's Response

Arago had barely left the podium on August 19 before the consequences were visible. An English journalist in the audience that day reportedly rushed straight to the nearest optician's shop and bought a camera. By evening, shops across Paris had sold out of the silver-plated copper plates needed to try the process. Within months, commercial portrait studios had opened in London, New York, and Paris, and by the early 1840s ordinary citizens across the world were sitting for daguerreotype portraits — capturing their faces with a permanence that paint had never been able to deliver to anyone outside the aristocracy.

August 19 is now observed internationally as World Photography Day.

History reminds us: the daguerreotype was not just a new technology — it was a fundamental shift in the human relationship with time. For the first time, ordinary people could step outside history's endless forgetting and leave an exact record of a face, a street, a moment. Every photograph taken today, on every phone and camera in the world, traces its lineage to a theater set designer in Paris who taught light how to write.
