On this day in 1888, the United States Patent Office issued four patents — numbered 388,116 through 388,119 — to William Seward Burroughs for his "Calculating-Machine." They had been filed between 1885 and 1887, and their issuance on August 21, 1888 marked the formal arrival of the first commercially viable adding machine: a device that could not only calculate, but print both the individual inputs and the running totals on a paper tape, creating an auditable record of every arithmetic operation.
The man behind it was obsessive, methodical, and in poor health for most of his adult life.
Burroughs had begun his career as a bank clerk in Auburn, New York. The work was exactly what he'd been told it should be — respectable, steady, gentlemanly. He hated it. Not because of the environment, but because of what he watched every day: competent, careful people making arithmetic mistakes through sheer tedium, then spending hours correcting them. Adding machines existed, but they were unreliable. In the hands of users who pulled the operating lever too fast or unevenly, they gave wrong answers. The machines didn't fail — the humans operating them did.
A doctor eventually advised Burroughs to move south for his health. He relocated to St. Louis, took a job at a machine shop, and began building his prototype. He made his design drawings on metal plates rather than paper to prevent the distortion that could introduce errors into the dimensions. Some drawings, according to contemporaneous accounts, were done under a microscope.
The Dashpot: The fundamental problem with existing adding machines was inconsistent human input. Pull the operating lever slowly and the gears meshed correctly. Pull it quickly and they didn't. Burroughs spent 72 consecutive sleepless hours working out a solution: an oil-filled hydraulic cylinder — a dashpot — that absorbed the variation in the operator's pull and governed the machine's internal mechanism to cycle at a uniform speed regardless of how erratically the lever was handled. The dashpot made the machine's accuracy independent of the operator's consistency. It was the breakthrough that made everything else work.
The Printing Mechanism: Earlier calculators showed results but created no record. Burroughs's machine printed every input and every subtotal on a continuous paper tape, giving banks and businesses something they had never had before from a calculating machine: a verifiable paper trail.
The Company: In 1886, two years before the patents were granted, Burroughs and several St. Louis businessmen founded the American Arithmometer Company to manufacture and sell the device. The first 50 machines proved difficult in practice — even with the dashpot, early production models had reliability problems — and Burroughs received a separate improved patent in 1893. By 1895, the machines were working reliably enough that adoption began spreading rapidly through the banking industry. After Burroughs's death, his partner John Boyer renamed the business the Burroughs Adding Machine Company in 1904, and the Burroughs Corporation in 1953.
In 1897, the Franklin Institute awarded Burroughs its Scott Medal — one of the oldest and most prestigious science and engineering awards in the United States. He received it shortly before his death.
William Seward Burroughs died on September 14, 1898, of tuberculosis, at the age of 41. The company he founded went on to become one of the dominant forces in business computing for the next century, eventually merging with Sperry in 1986 to form Unisys. The line of descent from his mechanical dashpot governor to mainframe business systems to modern enterprise infrastructure is direct and unbroken.
His grandson — also named William Seward Burroughs — became one of the most influential and controversial American writers of the twentieth century, best known for Naked Lunch. The novelist reportedly had a complicated relationship with the fortune built on the adding machine, once writing that the Burroughs Corporation was "everything I detested." History is sometimes fond of a good irony.

History reminds us: the modern computer didn't appear overnight. It grew step by step from clever mechanical devices designed to automate one tedious human task at a time — each breakthrough driven by someone who looked at a repetitive, error-prone process and decided it was an engineering problem waiting to be solved.
