On this day in 1851, a local daguerreotypist named Johann Julius Friedrich Berkowski made history at the Royal Observatory in Königsberg, Prussia — now Kaliningrad, Russia — by producing the world's first successful photograph of a total solar eclipse.
The project had been proposed by observatory director August Ludwig Busch, who was himself observing the eclipse from a different location that day. Berkowski faced the challenge alone, working with a setup that was modest by the standards even of 1851: a small refracting telescope of just 6.1 centimeters aperture, attached to a 15.8-centimeter Fraunhofer heliometer, connected to a daguerreotype camera.
The 84-Second Gamble: Daguerreotype plates were extraordinarily insensitive to light — even bright daylight required long exposures. An eclipse offered far less light than a clear day, and totality lasted only minutes. The dynamic contrast between the faintly glowing corona and the darkened sky presented a problem no photographer had yet solved. The instant the Moon's disk fully covered the Sun, Berkowski opened the shutter and counted 84 seconds — long enough to capture the corona, short enough that the returning sunlight wouldn't wash the image out.
The plate he pulled from the camera showed five distinct solar prominences extending from the Sun's limb — colossal arcs of glowing hydrogen visible at the edge of the Moon's disk. Astronomers observing that same eclipse from other locations confirmed what Berkowski's image suggested: the Moon could be seen physically covering and uncovering the prominences as it moved, proving they belonged to the Sun rather than being lunar mountains or atmospheric effects from Earth.
The original daguerreotype plate did not survive. It was destroyed during World War II — but not before the Royal Prussian Observatory had commissioned a local artist named R. Trossin to make an enlarged steel engraving from the plate. The image most commonly reproduced today as "the first photograph of a solar eclipse" is that second-generation engraving, not the plate itself.
The Birth of Astrophotography
Before 1851, astronomers relied on hand-drawn sketches made during the fleeting minutes of totality — records that differed significantly depending on the observer's eyesight, attention, and drawing skill. Berkowski's 84 seconds demonstrated that a camera attached to a telescope could produce an objective, permanent scientific record of celestial events, free of the artist's interpretation.
That single exposure opened a door. Solar spectroscopy, space-borne observatories, and eventually deep-space imaging platforms like the James Webb Space Telescope all trace their conceptual lineage to the same basic insight: that astronomy and photography, working together, could reveal things the human eye alone would always miss.
